Mighty Jab's Quintet – Caribbean Jazz
It was in Trinidad that vibraphonist and steeldrummer Xavier Mertian became Mighty Jab, a nickname enthusiastically adopted by the island's musicians. Since then, this jazz and Caribbean rhythm enthusiast has toured the stages, playing with giant steelbands and more intimate ensembles, crossing paths with big names like Étienne M'Bappé, Paco Séry, Magic Malik, and Stéphane Belmondo.
With Mighty Jab's Quintet, he brings together brilliant musicians to create a dialogue between jazz and Caribbean music. On steelpan, Mathieu Borgne, crowned champion of the 2022 PanoGrama competition, impresses with his virtuosity. On drums, Kristof Negrit infuses the soul of Guadeloupean Gwoka. The rhythm section is completed by Benjamin Moine on double bass, and Pierre Guicquero on trombone, whose talent captivated Jean-Loup Longnon.
The group alternates between original compositions and pieces by Jaco Pastorius, Roy Ayers, Etienne Charles, and Tony Williams, always with the infectious energy that captivates audiences. A debut album is in the works, featuring prestigious guest artists.
The audience is talking about it: “Mighty Job!”, “A great time between talented musicians!”, “What instrumentation!”
