”Hymn is the latest CD to date from Jacques Vidal, but there will be new compositions which will be the subject of a next registration scheduled for 2026.
Ten years that the double bass player Jacques Vidal had not released an album of personal compositions, preferring to devote himself from Charles Mingus (…).
However, his titles say it enough (Hymn, Spirit, Charles Mingus' Sound of Love ...), this disc is in no way a return to "the before-long", if there was one for Vidal. On the contrary, everything happens as if the spirituality of the master (...) and his aesthetic during the vidal, inspiring him from the titles tense of nervous life and vague soul, darkened with despair and almost always illuminated with romantic innocence. At the service of this music so delicate to approach, Pierrick Pédron (Alto saxophone) plays the perfection of contrasts with the trombone more in the flesh of Daniel Zimmermann to hire songs, complaints and sighs of desire, pain or weariness. Disks so successful are not common. Jacques Vidal was right to wait for the desire to be the strongest: his return to composition is dazzling. -Louis-Julien Nicolaou (Télérama)
